I hope you like a bit of monetary history! Introduced in Florence in 1252, the gold Florin coin set a definitive standard for currencies across the Mediterranean for three centuries due to the fact that it had no significant change in its design or metal content standard during that time. At its inception the value of the Florin was equal to the Lira 1:1, but by the year 1500 the florin had appreciated, seven Lira amounted to one Florin 7:1. The debasement of coinage, which is the practice of reducing the amount of precious metal in coins, led to inflation, which is a general increase in prices. This is similar to how an increase in the money supply can lead to inflation in today’s world. Fiat currencies are being devalued at an alarming rate due to inflation. Currently Argentina’s inflation rate is 110%+ and Turkey’s is 45%+.
